too serious Katamari

I just wanted to point out here that I’ve been playing a lot of Katamari lately — I bought Katamari Forever when it came out, and on a forum I frequent, we’re doing a competition for Katamari Damacy, the first game. If you don’t know about the game, it’s a game where you have a ball and you roll up small object in order to make your ball bigger which in turn allows you roll up bigger objects, leading you to eventually roll up the moon.

The game is amazing.

Anyway, I have been getting way too serious when I’m playing this game, and it’s kind of freaking me out. When I play Grand Theft Auto, if someone shoots me, or the cops show up, I start fucking murdering bitches, which makes sense, but with Katamari games, I tend to seriously tense up when I start bumping into things and pieces of my katamari start falling off.

I was just playing a level that I died in twice (I don’t know what was up with it — just couldn’t get my rhythm in it) and a car shaped like a swan was in my way and I got stuck. I couldn’t get around it and it kept bumping into me and pushing me in bad directions and making my katamari smaller. So I finally got away, thought to myself that I was going to go get bigger to go get my revenge. I rolled up some stuff to get bigger and came back to the street where that stupid swancar was and rolled that thing up.

It made me feel so good. I might have a problem.

bunch of little random things

  • I started work on my new LP, a blind run of Haunting Ground. I ask that no one leaves any spoilers or hints for me as I obviously want to be doing this with the least amount of information about the game as possible.
  • My backloggery.com account is getting crazy big. A lot of those games are ones I bought for really cheap or received as gifts, but at least here you can see what I’m currently playing.
  • Currently the forum is pretty dead. I’m trying to think up ideas to help boost talking but I’m not sure what to do. If you have any ideas, let me know!

Super Paper Mario videos!

So I had mentioned before that I started a viddler account for my stream videos but I just actually set up a page for the Super Paper Mario streams I’ve done. It’s extremely minimalistic, but it’s an easy playlist since Viddler doesn’t really have them. The last set, Set 4, which I recorded today, were with my new set up and are in widescreen and the audio is amazing compared to the others.

Just reminds me I need to finish up the OP for Eternal Darkness LP and put ones up for Super Castlevania and the thing I’m starting tomorrow! Eep. There’s always something more to do and all I wanna do is play Persona 4 and Katamari Forever (which is amazing too).

completing some work/what’s next?

Well, Eternal Darkness and Super Mario World 2+2 are done. I need to update the thread on this site to reflect what the one on SA says. I’m sure I’ll do it eventually. Plus I still haven’t done all the naming of the SMW videos. BUT I have finished recording and everything’s uploaded. I still need to make a few sanity videos for ED, but at least the gameplay is done.

Today I received a gift of Persona 4 from someone in Switzerland — thank you so much! — and the next game I’m going to be LPing that MikeNnemonic sent to me. It’s another horror game and I will be doing it just like I did CT3. I’m not going to start recording it until Dan gets his mixer so I won’t have to synch video and audio anymore, which was the biggest pain about doing CT3 and Luigi’s Mansion.

Today I’m going to start uploading the first video of the LP I did with Dan. Also, for those of you who are on SA, I’m involved in Jamesman’s Katamari Damacy competition thread. I’d suggest checking it out.

Glad to not have anything hanging over my head. Today I decided that before work I was just going to relax, watch a bit of an LP, and eat a giant bowl of cereal (now that we have soy milk!).

I don’t think I’m going to stream tomorrow since I want to start Persona 4 like you can’t even believe. I would be playing right now, but Dan is playing Final Fantasy XII. He’s been playing it on and off since it came out, and since he’s a completionist, he’s doing everything.

gullible people!

I can’t believe that I’ve seen people lately on youtube who are LPers and who believe they can become partners. If you read right on the Partner FAQ, “you own or have express permission to use and monetize all audio and video content that you upload — no exceptions.” And this is totally not true for anyone who does Let’s Plays.

But I figured it out today when I got this email:

Dear ssskinner,

Your video Let’s Play Super Mario World 2+2 – 35 – Penis and Save Stating has become popular on YouTube, and we’d like to invite you to start making money from it by including it in the YouTube Partnership Program

Making money from your video is easy. Here’s how it works: First sign into your YouTube account ssskinner. Then, complete the steps outlined here: [link redacted]. Once you’re finished, we’ll start placing ads next to your video and pay you a share of the revenue.

We look forward to adding your video to the YouTube Partnership Program. Thanks and good luck!

The YouTube Team

If you click on that link I removed, it says about thirty times that you must have 100% permission to earn money. You have to click, “I agree” like 10 times! Which means for the people who say they think they’re going to be partners…they’re either lying or don’t know what a copyright is.

Come on, people. Stop being gullible. Next thing you know, they’ll start trying to post content that’s unique so they get money so they don’t have to get off of their asses and get jobs. I mean, how can you stream for 36 hours in a row for donations every weekend if you have a job?

what is doing too much?

On Tuesday, I recorded three videos of Super Mario World 2+2 and streamed the first chapter of Super Paper Mario. Yesterday, I recorded four videos of Eternal Darkness, which meant I had to process all of them twice as usual, record 30 minutes while playing through Max’s chapter twice more for the other bosses, and do my typical editing schtick. I also set up a ssstreaming viddler account (which I’ll make a video about soon an probably a page here). And today, sitting at my computer, I feel like doing nothing. But I’m still feeling like there’s more to do. I know I could do some more stuff before I go to work, but thinking about it just stresses me out.

I wouldn’t be having fun, so instead Vega’s gonna play a little Silent Hill: Homecoming and I’ll watch him through skype. I know I wanna get these LPs done before school starts, but I still have about two weeks until it starts, and only about 12 videos total to get done.

Women-oriented Gaming Websites

I got a great post in the forum and I actually wanted to post my response here. GremlinzRUs, who I’ve seen in streams a few times, posted this nice missive about women oriented gaming websites, which she categorized into three types.

  1. Obvious corporate shills that would probably prefer soap made out of controllers over actual gaming, or wearing skimpy outfits over actually knowing anything about gaming. These also include sites that have all the same news that Joystiq/Kotaku/etc. does.
  2. Female-oriented communities that don’t seem to have much content/substance, haven’t updated in a while, or have completely gone under. My most recent example was one website that vomited glitter, press releases for girly games, and bad web design on my screen. It only left a third of the screen for actual content; a third of the screen was used for two sidebars (links and ads), and the rightmost third was completely empty. Another example included a clan related to the menstrual cycle that claimed to include all consoles, but really only had communities for FPSes, MMOs, and rhythm games.
  3. Blogs that seem to be strictly about women as it relates to gaming. I’ve only seen one so far, but I’m sure there are more. This particular one, a recent startup, was about being a “gamer’s girl.” I. I guess what pissed me off here was that she actually had some superficial list about Gamer’s Girl Pet Peeves and Gamer’s Pet Peeves. “Guys should open doors, pull out chairs, and charge the 360 controllers.” Really? Really? Did that sound good coming out of your mouth at all? I know she’s trying to make a point about relationships, but she comes off as superficial.

Okay, let me first give my opinions on the three types of gaming sites before I do anything else.

  1. I think sites with obviously unknowledgable women in skimpy clothes that are supposedly marketed towards women are actually made for men. I think that they are for men who, for whatever reason or another, want to have this image that all girls who game are hot. They are kind of a style that reminds me of car magazines with hot babes on the cover of every one, sprawled in bikinis over the hoods. Probably the equivalent of McDonald’s — all flash and style in the image, but then the content is a squished burger that tastes like salt and soy.
  2. Those half-assed sites are possibly made by people who have the idea but don’t know how to execute it. Poorly made websites sometimes just are like that because the person wants to make something stunning or content driven but has no technical knowledge. They end up with something fancy and broken or incomplete. My site is pretty minimalistic because of that. I’d liken this to some small restaurant that doesn’t sell enough and has to close — they don’t market right, they don’t know how to make a plate pretty, and they definitely don’t know how to serve their customers correctly.
  3. And the last, probably my most hated of all female stereotypes which links into a normal female stereotype: a woman can’t do shit, and if they do, it has to focus on the fact that she’s a woman. It’s how I feel about writing the poetry I write. A lot of women I know write feminist poetry, and if they don’t, it’s seen as such, no matter what her actual intent is.
Now, if you’re writing for an audience that just panders to the fact that you have a vagina, fuck off. You’re a person, not a gender, and and exploiting something like to get a bigger audience can just turn off your target group. I have to admit: when I started LPing, my videos used the tag “female” in them. I actually really don’t think that got me more views (according to youtube’s Insight) and something subtle like that doesn’t offend me. It’s when I see female gamers saying shit like, “we can play too,” or “respect me cuz I’m a girl,” that it pisses me off. Girl gamers aren’t special. We’re more rare, but it’s like getting a curly fry in the bottom of your regular fries. There it is. It’s different flavored. Sometimes you were expecting a regular fry. And you kind of have to go, “it’s still a fucking potato.”

I know what it’s like to want to be part of a community, possibly a community of girl gamers. But segregating ourselves like that is pointless — it just drives the wedge deeper. When I hear women in Let’s Plays making comments about how they can’t play cuz they’re girls, it pisses me off. In my Super Ghetto World LP, Oz and I made a lot of jokes about me being a girl, and if you knew Oz’s style, that’s just how he jokes. But to deprecate yourself about your skill just adds more fuel to the fire.

I especially loved Gremlinz’s comment, “Because the best gaming communities that are friendly to women aren’t run especially for women.” It’s true. Making communities that cater to just women makes it seem like we can’t hang with the big boys. We need a special place in the corner for rhythm games and virtual pets. We don’t. All you have to do is find a group. Hell, even somethingawful.com is a great place for girl gamers to post. I honestly don’t feel looked down on in the Games section there for being a woman. All you have to do is realize that you’re just a gamer, like every other person, and you don’t need a special pink hidey hole to pretend you need special treatment.

Also I gotta say fuck those assholes who feel like they have to point out what you look like. I get a ton of retarded comments from people saying I’m fat, ugly, or both, and it’s like I already know! I don’t need some random (probably ugly himself) gamer geek to point out something I already know. It’s not like they go, “you have long hair!” or “you have freckles!” It’s usually just “you’re fat,” because weight is the most important thing in the world. Ridiculous.

Go check out her post and respond, men and women both! I’m really curious as to how men feel about games being sold with sex or how they feel about women thinking they’re special for gaming.

welcome back and the state of my channel

I know it’s been a few weeks, but as I said on my YouTube video, when you have some kind of infection on your hands, you really don’t feel like exaserbating that by holding a controller and getting your hands all sweaty. But what was on my hands (which turned out to not be a fungus at all but some kind of ezcema or something — I still don’t know) is almost completely gone and I’m up to the task.

I uploaded two videos in the past two days — one of SMW2+2 and one of Eternal Darkness. Both LPs will be completed in the next few weeks before school starts. I also uploaded a new demoish thing where I cooked. Please don’t call it a “Let’s Cook” since not everything I do involves you guys. Harhar. Anyway, people seem to like it so there will be more in the future.

When school does start this fall, I’m not going to be able to LP as much as I did last semester. My plan right now is one of two options: either I LP and record a bunch of videos on Sundays and upload them during the week, or stream on Sundays. I’ll only be working on LPs once a week. I think alternating these two will probably be what I end up going with.

Either way, I appreciate you guys sticking with me while I was on that break. It was the longest I went without LPing since I started! It’s been just about a year since I started. I think I’ll be hitting 5,000 subs at the same time as I hit a year. Pretty cool in my opinion!

new hosting/knowing your LPers

Today I was hooked up with some server space by TheChrisD which was a welcome thing considering the server time I paid for last year was just running out and I needed somewhere new to take the place. Moving everything over was a bitch as I have a bunch of SQL databases and what not, but I got it done.

I’ve asked before whether or not you guys think you should know intimate details of the lives of the LPers you like, but I’m also curious about why people who watch my videos believe they know me. We’ve had no interaction. Yes, you’ve heard me talk and seen my streams possibly and you may know facts about me and my personality, but there are a lot of things you don’t know about me. People say that I am nice a lot of the time, but I’m not truly a nice person to most people.

On top of that, when I make one video where I’m not hyper and peppy for 100% of it, I get emails asking me how I feel about life and shit and if I’m sad or angry or something. I don’t know if it’s because people just want to ask me how my life is going or what. But this is how I just responded to one person who asked me that:

Sometimes I’m happy. Sometimes I am sad. Sometimes I am angry. Sometimes I am ecstatic. Sometimes I make vlogs and sometimes I don’t. I’m honestly an angry/sad person more than I’m happy/ecstatic. I enjoy making my vlogs.

I have fun doing things. I am myself, and to constantly pretend to be this happy bubbly person would be a lie. So sometimes I will have other emotions, but for people to say to me that I seem sadder or angrier lately, I find that interesting, as I post videos of myself playing video games most of the time, where I rage or laugh at the game, not at my life.

Clock Tower 2 stream/new page/omfg D:

Okay, I know I haven’t posted in a while, but here’s what I’ve been up to. I streamed Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust today. It was horrible and I recorded 2 videos of it.

The first video show cases how lame the beginning is. Here’s the second one, where I got a bunch of friends to help out.

There’s new Eternal Darkness and a lot of new Super Mario World 2+2 videos (I’m now using guest commentary for them so it’s going in a different direction). I posted the 4,000 sub special on my channel, so you can go check that out.

I have a lot I still wanna do but I haven’t been up to it. On the other hand, I have gotten together all of the Clock Tower and Clock Tower 2: The Struggle Within videos. The page I’ve made is set up so that when I finally stream or LP or whatever I do with the PS1 Clock Tower.
